What Is an MR Truck Licence?

A Medium Rigid (MR) licence allows you to drive any motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 8 tonnes with two axles, or tow a single trailer (excluding semi-trailers) up to 9 tonnes GVM. It’s one of the most in-demand heavy vehicle licences in Western Australia.

An MR licence opens the door to careers in delivery, logistics, local council work, school bus driving, and a lot more. It is also required for larger motorhomes and recreational vehicles. If your current job needs it or your next job depends on it, we will get you there.

How to Get Your MR Licence in WA: Step by Step

Hold a Valid C Class Licence

You must have held your C Class (car) licence continuously for at least one year before sitting the MR Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).

Step 1

Start Your Lessons

No learner's permit is required to start lessons. Book your first lesson with Mick and begin building real skills in a dual-control MR truck.

Step 2

Visit the Department of Transport

Complete an MR Driver's Licence application, take an eyesight test, and pass the heavy vehicle theory test (8 out of 10 correct). You'll receive your MR Learner's Permit and test entitlement.

Step 3

Book Your Driving Test

Once you're at the right skill level, Mick can help you schedule your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) with the Department of Transport. The DoT test is the only way to obtain your MR licence.

Step 4

Pass and Drive

Pass your PDA and you're licenced. Simple as that.

Step 5

Industry experience shows that a minimum of 5-6 hours of training (including the test) is recommended to reach a solid standard of competency in a manual synchromesh truck. Less than 5 hours total is not recommended and can reduce your chances of passing.

A minimum 3-hour training block is required before sitting the MR PDA with Mick. Additional 2-hour lesson blocks are available depending on skill level and readiness.

One of the reasons Mick’s students chose Drive MR is the flexible lesson times. Most large driving schools only run during standard business hours on weekdays. That doesn’t work for everyone. Mick offers:

What to Bring

⦿ Your current C Class driver's licence
⦿ Enclosed, comfortable shoes such as runners or soft shoes. Steel-capped boots are not permitted.
⦿ Clean clothing

Manual Gearbox Experience

Students should be comfortable with a manual gearbox. If you haven't driven manual for a while, a refresher lesson in a C Class manual car (dual-control) is highly recommended before starting MR lessons.

MR Learners Permit

If you want to get your PDA booked as quickly as possible, we recommend heading to a Department of Transport licensing centre early to obtain your MR Learner's Permit and Test Entitlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Learner's Permit to start lessons?

No. You can begin lessons without a Learners Permit. However, you'll need your MR Learners Permit before you can sit the practical driving test with the Department of Transport.

How many hours of training will I need?

It depends on your experience and skill level. The recommended minimum is 5-6 hours including the test. Mick will give you an honest assessment after your first lesson and recommend a plan to get you through first time.

What if I've never driven a manual before?

No problem, but a manual refresher in a C Class car is strongly recommended before you start. We can help sort that out if needed.

Where do lessons take place?

Will Mick push me into a test before I'm ready?

Never. One of the key things that sets Mick apart is that he genuinely won't put you forward for a test unless he's confident you'll pass. Your money and your time matter.

Cancellation Policy & Terms

Please review our cancellation policy, payment terms, and important lesson guidelines before booking your MR training.

A minimum of 2 days notice is required to cancel or reschedule a lesson, otherwise the full lesson fee is payable.
No-shows: If you don't arrive within 15 minutes of your scheduled lesson, the full fee applies.
A valid doctor's certificate allows rescheduling without penalty.
The MR Lesson + Test package includes a non-refundable $80 booking fee. Cancellations with 2 days notice receive a refund minus this fee.
The instructor reserves the right to cancel a lesson if the student appears unfit to drive or is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
All traffic fines and penalties incurred during a lesson are the sole responsibility of the student.
